What’s new: Senators Peter Welch (D-VT), Susan Collins (R-ME), and Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-DE) reintroduced the Farm to School Act, legislation that aims to offer fresh, locally grown foods in schools across the country.
The proposed bill aims to:
- Increase the program’s mandatory funding from $5 million to $15 million per year.
- Raise the maximum grant award to $500,000.
- Reduce barriers to apply for USDA’s Farm to School grants by modifying or waiving the 25% non-federal matching requirement.
Why it matters—It will help schools:
- Improve procurement and distribution of local foods.
- Expand the scope of the program to include pre-schools, summer food service and after-school programs.
