1 big thing: Submit your comments on a federal ultra-processed foods (UPF) definition

What’s new: School nutrition professionals and industry partners can use SNA’s easy-to-customize template letter to submit individual comments to HHS and USDA’s Request for Information on developing a uniform federal definition for ultra-processed foods (UPFs).

Why it matters: SNA submitted comments and is now urging all school nutrition advocates to add their voices!

  • Any definition of UPFs adopted at the federal level will likely influence nutrition standards and product development.
  • Your front-line experience is essential: SNA stressed that schools “simply lack the staff, equipment, infrastructure, time and critical funding to scratch prepare all menu options” and emphasized that federal agencies need to hear from school nutrition professionals about operational realities.

What’s next: School nutrition professionals and industry partners are encouraged to submit individual comments using our easy-to-customize template letters. The federal comment period closes September 23, 2025.

We are a state affiliate to the School Nutrition Association (SNA), which represents over 55,000 individuals who have made a commitment to child nutrition.
